What is the Correct Membership Category for You?
Full Member
A Full Member of the ECA has voting rights and can hold a position on the ECA Council. Practising Members will have their contact details listed on the ECA website, however Early Career Ecological Consultants and Retired Ecological Consultants will not be listed on the website.
- Practising Ecological Consultant – ($205)
A person with at least 2 years’ experience who undertakes studies of the ecology of flora and fauna as an occupation with respect to proposed developments or similar activities and is the proprietor of, or an employee of a consulting business, incorporated or otherwise.
To qualify as a Practising Ecological Consultant an applicant:
- must have appropriate tertiary qualification (or equivalent)
- conduct the majority of current work as a consultant ecologist within Australia
- must sign the Code of Ethics
- must provide a CV with two referees who are professional ecologists with experience in Australia (preferably NSW).
- must be supported by signatures of two Practising Members of the Ecological Consultants Association of NSW on the application form (these practising members must know the work of the applicant and be satisfied that it is at a level considered acceptable by the ECA or provide two recent examples of work (if signatures are not possible).
- Must have at least two years experience as an ecological consultant.
- Early Career Ecological Consultant – $150
For those who undertakes studies of the ecology of flora and fauna as an occupation but are new to the ecological consulting industry, and are not yet able to demonstrate suitable examples of their own work and/or are unable to obtain signatures of two Practising Ecological Consultant Members (Full Members) as Referees.
To qualify as an Early Career Ecological Consultant an applicant:
- must have appropriate tertiary qualification (or equivalent)
- conduct the majority of current work as a consultant ecologist within Australia
- must sign the Code of Ethics
- must provide a CV with two referees who are professional ecologists with experience in Australia (preferably NSW).
- does not need to provide signatures of two Practising Ecological Consultant Members (Full Members) as Referees
- must not be eligible to be a Practising Ecological Consultant
- Retired Ecological Consultant – $150
To qualify as a Retired Ecological Consultant an applicant:
- must not be earning an income as an Ecological Consultant or an Ecologist in a different discipline
- must have been a practising member of the Ecological Consultants Association of NSW for at least 3 years prior to retirement.
- Certified Practising Ecological Consultant
To qualify as a Certified Practising Ecological Consultant an applicant:
- must be a Practising Ecological Consultant (as above)
- must apply and be accepted as a Certified Practising Ecological Consultant. See CPEC Scheme for details.
Associate Membership ($65)
Associate Members of the ECA have no voting rights.
- Government Ecological / Environment Officer
This category is available to Ecologists currently employed by government departments.
To qualify as a Government Ecological / Environment Officer an applicant:
- must sign the Code of Ethics
- must provide a current CV
- does not need to provide signatures of two Practising Ecological Consultant Members (Full Members) as Referees.
- Non-practising Member
This category is suitable for ecologists and professionals in related disciplines.
To qualify as a Non-practising Member an applicant:
- must not currently be working as a consultant ecologist within Australia
- must not be currently employed as an ecologist by a Government department (see suitable category above)
- must provide a current CV
- is not required to sign the Code of Ethics
- does not need to provide signatures of referees
- Subscriber
This category is suitable for service providers to the ecological / environmental industry who may wish to keep abreast of affairs of the ecological consultancy industry.
To qualify as a Subscriber an applicant:
- must not currently be working as an ecologist
- must provide a current CV
- is not required to sign the Code of Ethics
- does not need to provide signatures of referees
A subscriber does not receive member discounts at conferences and workshops.
Student Membership ($35)
Student Members of the ECA have no voting rights.
- Student Member
This category is suitable for students enrolled in relevant disciplines in tertiary institutions, who wish to keep abreast of affairs of the ecological consultancy industry.
To qualify as a Student an applicant:
- must not be earning an income as an ecological consultant during the academic terms or semesters of full- or part-time study
- must provide a current CV
- is not required to sign the Code of Ethics
- does not need to provide signatures of referees

All persons wishing to become practising or associate members of the Ecological Consultants Association must acknowledge and abide by the “Ecological Consultants Association (NSW) Code of Business Practice, Professional Conduct and Ethics”. For existing members wishing to renew their membership, please use the on-line renewal accessed from the ECA Homepage.
Please Note: if you have overdue fees for workshops or conferences, membership renewal will not be considered.
